What changes the price
- Hours. A party package covers 3 to 4 hours and a wedding banquet 5 to 6. Every hour past the agreed end time is charged.
- Sound and lighting. A setup for 100 guests costs less than one for a 300 guest ballroom with moving heads on a truss. See DJ sound and lighting.
- An emcee or a live musician. Each one moves you into a bigger package. See DJ with live sax or violin.
- The DJ's experience. A DJ with years of wedding banquets behind them costs more than a newer DJ.
- The venue. Some ballrooms need a bigger rig than others, and remote venues add travel.
- How far ahead you book. A peak season Saturday booked a few weeks before can cost more, if a DJ is free at all.
What the fee covers
The fee covers the DJ's time, a briefing before the event, preparation and the agreed hours. A wedding package also covers the wireless mics, a music planning session, basic dance floor lighting and usually an afternoon sound check. Overtime and travel to remote venues are quoted separately. A bigger lighting rig, an emcee and live musicians are add-ons.
How to keep the cost down
Book early, especially for September to December weddings and November and December company dinners. Keep the hours to what you need: a DJ for the dance segment only costs less than one for the whole evening. If your budget is tight, a DJ costs less than a full live band and needs less stage space.
The checks before you confirm
Ask what size of sound system is included, how many wireless mics come with it, whether the sound check is in the booking, and what the extra hour rate is. Get the venue's music cut-off and pass it to the DJ. The planning guide has the full list.
